The public library is a symbol and tool for free and self-directed learning in every city. The Central Library is intended to represent the city and the spirit of its citizens. The conversion of the Kulturpalast provided an opportunity to integrate the two central city libraries under one roof and further develop them such that in the future they can continue to live up to Dresdeners’ expectations.
The new library offers approx. 5,500 square metres of public space. Besides shelves for 300,000 items of media, there are 450 places for reading, Internet, listening and playing. What is new are superbly equipped training, event and exhibition rooms, a 3-D guidance system integrated into the catalogue, self-service lending and automatic media sorting. User seating of every conceivable kind, most with a view of the city, rooms for group work, a reading room, and listening and viewing possibilities for all digital media formats invite visitors to research, work, study, enjoy and exchange ideas. The large glass surfaces create a connection between the inside and the outside. Visitors have a wonderful view of the city.
