Following the great success of the "Luftwurzeln" project in 2023, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, in cooperation with Kommunale Immobilien Dresden GmbH (KiD), is bringing another art installation to the forecourt of the Kulturpalast from April to September 2024.
The aim of "Green City Sounds" is to create a highly visible artistic symbol for greater sustainability, climate protection and resource conservation in one of Dresden's most central squares. The temporary installation of climate-resistant trees on the forecourt of the Kulturpalast will create a green space for discourse that invites people to linger and exchange ideas and, not least, adds a further, low-barrier dimension to the Kulturpalast as the city's "living room".
The fifteen trees in total come from the tree nursery of Dresden-based company Thümer-Landschaftsbau and will be used to green the new administration centre on Ferdinandplatz after this stopover in September 2024. Bladder ash, amber tree, ironwood tree, golden gleditsia and winter lime were selected for this purpose, as they are better equipped to cope with rising temperatures in the summer months than many conventional species.
Seating designed by Noack Landscape Architects, in which the tree containers are set, is in the shape of a hexagon - a geometric image of the concert hall that visually, but above all programmatically, builds a bridge from the inside to the outside.
The installation, including seating, was manufactured by Ed. ZÜBLIN's Dresden branch, a project in which five of the company's first-year apprentices have also been involved over the last three weeks. A total of 250m² of plywood was used as formwork to make this green space a reality. ZÜBLIN's apprentice project shows how commitment and craftsmanship can bring about positive change in the community.
